I think it’s no secret that after the immense success of Avengers Endgame in 2019, many people (including myself) would have found it to be a satisfying conclusion to Marvel’s cinematic universe which has been building for more than 10 years up until Endgame. Since the ending of Endgame, Marvel movies and superhero movies in general have struggled to gain traction with many new Marvel movies such as their latest instalment “The Marvels” breaking all the wrong kinds of box office records for lowest opening box office on opening weekend. With declining interest in superhero movies from the general public, this now leaves a gap in the movie industry that has previously been filled for almost 15 years. So I now ask, what now for movies?
As time moves on, Hollywood will need to evolve and move away from superhero movies as there is still a hunger and desire for films with alternative narratives and genres. These are best exemplified by the majorly successful movies such as “Parasite”, “Get Out”, and “Nomadland”. These critically and commercially successful films are examples the audiences crave more that go far beyond the familiar superhero tropes we have seen over the past 15 years. The current state of Hollywood and the superhero genre should be viewed as a transformative moment rather than a demise of Hollywood itself. The industry is only just readjusting itself to align with what the audience wants and hopefully the future of cinema can provide many more engaging moments for us.
