It was honestly not the most inspiring week for new music this past Friday, despite artists like Dua Lipa, Trippie Redd and Pink Pantheress all releasing new albums and singles. Nothing really stood out that made me stop and think that it would be a song I would be listening to on repeat for a week, at least. But the show must go on, and I cannot believe that MGMT's 'Mother Nature' from last week did not get as much love as it should have gotten. It coincided with the announcement of their first full length studio album since 2018's 'Little Dark Age.'
The song itself uses synths and other instruments similar to other dreampop songs, making it sound very relaxed. Whilst other dreampop classics sound dark and vintage, 'Mother Nature' has a light and modern feel to it. Thematically, in true MGMT fashion, the song touches on themes of coming of age and growing up. But also the song marks a new era for the duo. It acts as an announcement for what is to come. Most notably, it highlights that MGMT's songwriting is going to become more straightforward rather than layered and ready to be interpreted.
Is this for the better? Only time will tell. As stated by the song's lyrics, even the band themselves are hesitant. But this single just highlights that MGMT still has the charm that we loved from albums like 'Oracular Spectacular' and 'Little Dark Age.' 8/10.
