Max Verstappens domination and why it is bad for F1

Max Verstappen in the 2023 season has won a staggering 17/20 races, and 11 of those wins coming consecutively, with 2 races still remaining. That is 85% of races so far and even if he doesn’t win the last 2 races he will maintain a 77% win rate across the season. But what about the other 3 races that he hasn’t won this year? Well, 2 of them were won by his Red Bull racing team mate Sergio Perez and the other race won by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. With Red Bull Racing winning a total of 19/20 Grand Prix’s this season many have called it the worst season in F1 history and an outcry for rules to be overhauled to stop Max Verstappen and Red Bull's dominance.

Where this poses a big problem for F1 is the rapidly declining viewership due to the uncompetitive nature of recent Grand Prix’s. As many people would know Formula 1 received a huge following during the lockdown periods (2020-2021) with the huge success of the Netflix show “Drive to Survive”. This along with the 2021 season which saw Verstappen defeat Lewis Hamilton at the final race in Abu Dhabi would give Formula 1 their long awaited break into the American market with a record crowd attending the United States Grand Prix in both 2021 and 2022. However Verstappen’s recent domination has turned many viewers off Formula 1 in general with ratings for the most recent Brazilian Grand Prix plummeting to an all time low for the 2023 season. Formula 1 as a sport seems to be often plagued with long periods of domination by either a team or a driver or more often than not both at the same time, with this becoming a common occurrence. Formula 1 as a sport has a problem and if they intend on keeping their fan base a drastic rule change will need to be made.
