Cedric's Selections - Week #4

Yet again The Boy has dropped new music. In a bumper week for music surrounded by other monster acts including boygenius, Ari Lennox and André 3000, Drake returns with a bit of a confusing project- 'Scary Hours 3.' Is it an EP like the previous instalments of the Scary Hours series? Or is it the deluxe to 'For All The Dogs,' as seen on streaming services? It isn't very clear, but what is clear is that Drake has taken on the advice of his fans and returned to rapping.

While the majority of the last few Drake projects have been a bloated, confusing mess in order to impress as many people as possible, the '6ix God' returns to his lyrical, concise best in a sound that is comparable to 2013's 'Nothing Was The Same.' In part, it is due to the production on this project. Rather than employing the 'hit makers,' Drake places the production in the hands of guys like The Alchemist and Conductor Williams. This, in my opinion, has allowed Drake to stray away from his normal projects with a million different sounds over 23 songs to please as many people as possible. The fact that this six pack of songs was not advertised to the death and did not really have time to reach mainstream advertisement has in a way released the pressure of producing a project full of hits. Similar to Jack Harlow earlier this year.

The song I am going to highlight today is 'The Shoe Fits.' I saw someone on Twitter saying that Drake is admitting that he fell off, but I don't know how to feel about the lyrics in this one. He literally says he doesn't know how to rap like back in the day, but inversely, the rapping on this project disproves this statement completely, and is the most concise project he has put out for a long while. Drake did say that he was going to take a break after 'For All The Dogs,' so there is potential that this is the final project we see from the Canadian hitmaker for a while. But when he does return, I would love to see him return to a full album of rapping like in eras gone by.
